Partnering for Peace: How we’re tackling PTSD with the Elk Institute

For many veterans in the Brazos Valley, the transition from military service to civilian life isn’t just about finding a new career or a place to live — it is about finding peace. At Brazos Valley Cares (BVC), we operate under a core conviction: Veterans are not victims. They are resilient, capable leaders who have navigated the most stressful environments imaginable.

However, even the strongest leaders occasionally face “tactical” challenges that require specialized support. When it comes to the invisible wounds of war, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), BVC is proud to partner with the Elk Institute for Psychological Health & Performance to provide world-class care right here in our community.

Redefining PTSD: From Trauma to Performance

The traditional approach to PTSD often focuses on long-term “management” of symptoms, which can sometimes reinforce a victim mindset. At BVC, we believe in a different path. Our partnership with the Elk Institute, led by the renowned Dr. Carrie Elk, focuses on a high-performance model of psychological health.

Instead of asking “What is wrong with you?”, this approach acknowledges what happened to you and provides the tools to process those events effectively. The goal isn’t just to “cope” — it is to achieve a state of peace and peak performance so our veterans can continue building a vibrant Brazos Valley.

Why the Elk Institute Partnership Matters

Traditional mental health resources can sometimes involve long wait times or clinical environments that don’t always resonate with the veteran experience. The Elk Institute specializes in Individualized Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) treatment specifically designed for military populations.

Key benefits of this partnership include:

  • Rapid Intervention: Helping veterans process trauma in a shorter timeframe than traditional talk therapy.
  • No Stigma: We treat psychological health with the same pragmatism as physical therapy for a sports injury.
  • Community Integration: By helping veterans find internal peace, we empower them to be better neighbors, parents, and employees.

Supporting the Whole Veteran

At Brazos Valley Cares, we know that financial stress and psychological stress are often linked. That is why our Emergency Reserve Fund (ERF) works in tandem with our mental health initiatives. If a veteran is struggling with the symptoms of PTSD, the last thing they should worry about is how to pay for treatment or how to keep the lights on while they seek help.

By providing financial assistance for utilities, rent, and medical needs, we clear the obstacles so veterans can focus entirely on their recovery and performance through programs like those offered by the Elk Institute.

How You Can Help

The Brazos Valley is a wonderful place to be a veteran because of the people who live here. Our “Partnering for Peace” initiative is funded by the generosity of local donors and the success of events like our annual Steak Your Support gala.

When you invest in BVC, you aren’t just giving a handout; you are funding a strategic intervention that saves lives, restores families, and strengthens the fabric of our seven-county region.
